Group Mentoring 1 - Just Start - Keys to Courage

October 20, 2021

What is the purpose of group mentoring?

To help you to reflect on the ideas of the Leader Lab and apply them to your own lives.

Reflection Quotes

Reflect on any one of the quotes and discuss in pairs. These are excerpts from a book by Jacqueline Novogratz. What do you think of each statement? What did you like about it?

Quote 1

“Change is for all of us. The key is to start where you are. The key is to start with what you have. You're just starting out. This is based on the belief that we can all lead, create change, and build a better world”.

Quote 2

“Those I’ve known who’ve most changed the world exhibit a voracious curiosity about the world and other people, and a willingness to listen and empathize with those unlike them. These people stand apart not because of school degrees or the size of their bank accounts, but because of their character, their willingness to build reservoirs of courage and stand for their beliefs, even if they stand alone”.

Quote 3

“Of course, this kind of character isn’t built overnight. It is honed through a lifelong process of committing to something bigger than yourself, aspiring to qualities of moral leadership, defining success by how others fare because of your efforts, embedding a sense of purpose into your daily decisions.”

Reflection Questions

Think of someone you admire who has done something to build a better world. What is a quality that you admire about them?

Look around your country. What challenges do you see? Focus on one: What would you like to see instead?

What is a quality or skill that you want to build during this programme?

Reflection Questions on Role Play

Joanna is the girl in the clip who is wearing glasses. Ellie is her friend, to the right of the video

Questions:

  1. What did Ellie have to say about her efforts to get work experience?

  2. What did Joanna do about her work experience?

  3. What attitude did Ellie show in her efforts to get work experience? (curiosity, risk- taking, attitude to challenges, listening, courage).

  4. What Joanna ’s attitude show? (again see if they can refer to material in leader lab and also other ideas they may have)

  5. Could Ellie learn from Joanna?

  6. What do you see of yourself in this role play and could you take away, an attitude to new situations or personal change that you would like to have ?

Leader Lab 1 - Just start - Keys to courage

A key element to leadership is to start. We are all aware of the problems in our community, our society, our world. Being aware is not the same as actively helping: getting stuck in, engaging with your reality. Change is possible and it is the domain of all of us.

What if our Golden Rule were not only 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' but also 'Give more to the world than you take from it'? That would change everything. If enough of us pursued that path, the world of inequality, exploitation, and injustice would slowly be replaced by a world of inclusion, fairness, and dignity.”

— Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO of Acumen.

What are the obstacles that prevent us from starting? Paul talked about following your heart, be accepting of our vulnerability and fear, to take the first step to doing what you truly believe is worth doing.

We offer you some complimentary resources that can help you delve into the topic. This is particularly relevant for those who are using the components of Momentum Leadership for the Gaisce Awards.
